Free Luna

Red Court Farm has the power to release Luna into sanctuary to live safe and free for the rest of her life

As you may know, for the past few months, Animal Rising has been investigating life inside Red Court Farm in Ipswich. Our cameras followed a mother pig named Luna for a month: her life, her babies, and the conditions around her. As we learned about her as an individual and a mother, what we saw made us sick. Millions of pigs like Luna are imprisoned on factory farms. But now that we know her, we can’t ignore the chance to change her future.

Luna gave birth inside a farrowing crate: a metal enclosure that keeps a mother pig in one position while her piglets move around her. She could only either stand up and lie down. She could not turn around or walk. We repeatedly saw her biting the bars, a recognised sign of stress in pigs prevented from doing what they're wired to do.

Even inside that crate, Luna tried. She fed her piglets. She resisted, pushing against the bars, resisting the farmers when they came for her babies. The crate stops a mother pig from mothering in any real sense, but it didn't stop Luna from trying.

Then her babies were taken from her. She had no way of knowing why, or where they were going. She couldn't even turn to watch them go.

And she will be subjected to this over and over. According to our investigations, based on her cycle, Luna has almost certainly already been inseminated again. Later this year, she'll be confined once more to give birth to another litter, and the pattern repeats: pregnancy, confinement, birth, separation. In the same barn as Luna, some mothers were on their eighth pregnancy.

We saw where that leads at Red Court Farm. A neighbouring sow we named Renee was severely lame, barely able to stand, before she was forcibly removed from her crate and killed. Across the farm, we documented other lame and injured sows, and dead piglets left strewn about in the farrowing units.

We don't want that to be Luna's future. There's another option.

Red Court Farm can free her. We're asking them to do exactly that.

But it's crucial we have your help to build the pressure. This is a fight we can win. Public pressure is powerful and Red Court Farm is not immune: the more people watching, the harder Luna's story is to ignore. And we have a plan…

From 1 September, Animal Rising campaigner Michelle Farnham is spending 21 days and nights living inside a farrowing crate in Trafalgar Square to introduce the public to the cruelty that roughly 200,000 mother pigs are experiencing in this very moment.

We’re in awe of Michelle's bravery, but importantly the suffering Michelle is willing to endure is a fraction of what Luna endures every day. Michelle can walk out when the 21 days are over. Luna can't.

That's why we need you to sign and multiply your impact by sharing this petition as far as you can. Every signature tells Red Court Farm that people are watching.

If you want to do more, you can:

- Speak up for Luna.

Leave a comment on the petition telling Red Court Farm why she deserves her freedom. Personal stories move the needle more than numbers alone.

- Follow Michelle’s journey.

Pigs are intelligent, sentient creatures that deserve our respect and protection; not being treated like soul-less machines. Please show some compassion and free Luna – and go free range for the rest! You
